Do you remember the shocking death of a 17-year-old track star, Arielle Newman in April, 2007? Her death was due to absorption of methyl salicylate, an anti-inflammatory muscle cream contained in many over-the-counter pain relievers such as Bengay and Icy Hot. Yes, she may have “over-dosed,” but that doesn’t make it less alarming. Besides, it’s not like you can bathe in it.
The point is that the general public is using these products with no reservation, suspicion, or proper warnings. And Newman was no average girl… she was an athlete, meaning her body was in top condition! Who knows how many silent deaths there have been given that these products are used largely by the elderly? I don’t even want to think about it. I for one will not let my family use them.
What you put on your body doesn’t stay there. Your skin literally soaks it all up and it goes into your bloodstream and the rest of the organs! It’s like getting intravenous injection of poison! Let’s face it, would you drink your facial toner… perhaps some acetone? Worse yet, would you feed it to your kids? Of course not! But that is precisely what most people are doing.
An average person uses some 200+ chemicals on herself and that’s just in the morning. Many baby products contain just as much chemicals and as you can guess, babies and kids with their delicate skin are at the greatest risk of permanent damages.
A recent study released by the nonprofit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that many mainstream kids’ bath products, including shampoo and bubble baths, contain 1,4-dioxane, which the Environmental Protection Agency classifies a probable human carcinogen.... Oh no, bubble bath? That is absolutely abominable!
And, some of the most popular kids’ bubble bath exceeds the already too lenient limit set by the FDA (to ensure that the products you’re buying for your kids are dioxane-free, please avoid those with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which are commonly found in shampoos and bath products). And the cumulative effect of using multiple products together, of course, can have detrimental effect.
We hear medical experts often say that a little bit of "chemical A" is “harmless.” They report a little too late that the combination of "chemical A" used in conjunction with "chemical B" where the resulting "chemical C" turned out to be some 100,000 times more harmful.
Arielle’s mother, Alice Newman, was quoted saying, “I am scrupulous about my children’s health. I did not think an over-the-counter product could be unsafe.” This comment must serve as a strong wake-up call for us all.
